African Americans have been struggling for equality and freedom throughout time. There has been many civil rights movements that have attempt to help many African Americans reach their goals of equality and freedom in a country where racism was the main issue. One organization that have help African Americans fight for their rights are the Black Panther Party and the Black Lives Matter movement. Even though these two movements are 50 years apart it still had a great impact in the Black community. Both the Black Panther Party and the Black Lives Matter are fighting for self-defense due to the killing of many African Americans by police in the United States. However both had different leadership, strategies, and ideologies . The Black Panthers party had a stronger leadership, carry a firearms to intimidate police, community programs, and media (newspapers, cartoons) and their ideologies were based on Marxist-Leninist . On the other hand the Black Lives Matter has a weak leadership, used protests, media (twitter and cellphones), and their ideologies were based on guiding principles which allow them to form their platform.  The year of 1966 was a year in which many civil rights movement started to emerge in the United States. There were many movements that were fighting for the equality of African Americans in particular, however the assassination of Malcolm X and the death of Mathew Johnson by the San Francisco police contribute to the formation of the Black Panther Part. This party was founded by  Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in October of 1966 in Oakland California.  The Black Panther Party was founded to fight for self-defense of minority communities against the U.S. government, police, and to establish socialism through mass organization and community based programs. It was the first organization that fought for ethnic minorities and working class emancipation. The goals of the party was to establish economic, social, and political equality without focusing on gender and color. The strategies used by the Black Panther Party followed Malcolm X beliefs of international working class unity across the spectrum of color, gender, and united with various minority groups and white revolutionary groups. In addition the Black Panther Party beliefs were also founded by the tenants of Maoism which set the party as the Vanguard of the revolution and worked towards establishing a united front. The strong leadership of Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, and many more lead this organizations to gain power and challenge police brutality against many African Americans. However Huey and Bobby were the most influential and stronger leaders of the Black Panther Party. Both met in 1961 at Merritt College in Oakland California and formed the Negro History Fact Group to offer classes in Black history. Their experiences of working in different Black Power organizations help them in the leadership role in the organization. For example they joined Donald Warden’s Afro American Association in which they deliberated  and read traditions and ideas inspired by Malcolm X and many other black leaders. In addition Huey and Bobby worked at the Neighborhood Anti- Poverty Center running youth service programs which later help them in the development of the Black Panthers Party community survival programs. Their experience working with different organizations lead both Huey and Bobby to become great leaders of the Black Panther Party during the 1960s and 1970s. The party ideologies were founded by Newton’s ideas which where based on Marxist-Leninist and health activism. The Black Panther Party and its ideologies were describes as evolutionary. As stated by the Huey Newton ” The ideology of the Black Panther Party is the historical experience of Black people and the wisdom  gained by Black people in their 400 year long struggle against the system of racist oppression and economic  exploration in Babylon, interpreted through the prism of the Marxist-Leninist.” Newton take into account the experience and wisdom of African Americans to fight the racism and police brutality against many minorities especially African Americans. The Marxist-Leninist states that minorities or disadvantage classes need to fight their oppressor and  those who are oppressed will dictate the working class to step towards communist rule. In addition the Black Panther Party also had a health activism ideology in which it helps African Americans and other minorities prepare themselves for empowerment and self determination to reach equality and their political causes. Through the use of different programs the party was able to help many people economically, socially, give them education, healthier lifestyle, and many more advantages that helped those who were oppressed by the government and policemen. The strategies used by the Black Panther Party use to provide self-defense for the black community was intimidation, community programs, and the use of media(newspapers, cartoons). The members of the Black Panther party began carrying guns and following police around to stop them from brutalizing any African American. For example in the movie the Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution ” members of the Black Panthers party followed policemen around and if they saw officers searching any African American  they will get in their car and go over to the scene and watched with their guns on full display. However the policeman got angry and started to question them and intimidate them with threats of arrest. But it wasn’t easy to intimidate the member of the party because Huey P. Newton had studied the law and was able to quote every law and court rulings according to their the situation.” The use of guns and taking action lead the police to stop brutalizing for a period of time many African Americans. Many policeman were afraid using violence and attack the Black community because of the Black Panthers party reaction against them. This lead many to see the party as a threat to the United States, while the Black community saw the Panthers as a sign of respect and a stop to police brutality. In addition the party created community programs to help the Black community. Some of these programs included breakfast programs for schoolchildren, medical clinics, clothing programs, buses to prison programs, food programs, ambulance programs, etc. According to Newton “Our programs are nor a revolutionary program or a reformist program. It is a strategy through which we are organizing people for revolution. Its is impossible to wage an armed struggle if you don’t have the masses organized.” (The Revolution Has Come, Spencer 117)  These programs allowed African Americans and other oppressed communities to meet their basic necessities which helped them developed and acquire the resources for self-determination and empowerment.  Furthermore the use of media such as newspapers and cartoons allow the Black Panthers to gather support from different races, expand their message, and kept communities inform of everything that was affecting the community. For example the Black Panther Party’ newspaper would have Emory Douglas’s bold political graphics such as Newton and a picture of a gun. As stated in the book The Revolution Has Come by Robyn C. Spencer “The Black Panther Party’s  newspaper was a ,medium of their growth. The newspaper published updates on Newton’s trial and the strategies the Panthers were using to obtain his lease. It monitored and reported on progressive activism in the United States and abroad. International news stories about African Americans politics and liberation movement…..The newspaper did not just hope to inform; it facilitated readers political involvement. Protest were chronicled, rallies, were announced and petitions were offered for readers disseminate.” (71-72). The newspaper and used of media  allows the Black Panther Party to depict all of their struggles to all  and at the same time it celebrated activism and promoted black pride and consciousness. On the other hand the Black Lives Matter movement was founded in 2013 by three Black women named Aliza Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. These three women created this movement in response to the murder of deaths of many African Americans in the hands of law enforcement authorities and vigilantes across the country. This movement began with a hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media (twitter) after the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman a white policeman. However in  2014 it became recognized all over the world because of their streets demonstrations and the death of two more African Americans in New York and Ferguson. Their goals is to encourage empathy towards black communities, illustrate institutional oppression against African Americans and others minorities, and change policies that would make everyone safer. However their main objective was to encourage and let all of American society know that Black Lives should be valued and protected by the law. The Black Lives Matter movement is lacking leadership and has a loose structure which is seen as a more democratic movement because it allows its members to shared their goals without a having a central leader or hierarchy to follow . ” #BlackLivesMatter has reinvigorating the Occupy method which believes decentralized and “leaderless” actions are more democratic, essentially allowing its followers to act on what they want to do without the restrain of others weighing in.” (176). The movement allows people to come up with their own solutions instead of relying on a leader which might not be familiar with what its going in their community. It helps them take ownership of the political struggles that are affecting their lives and their community. As Ella Bakes the NAACP secretary and executive of Southern Christian Leadership conference once said “strong people don’t need leaders” because a leader disempowered people making them feel that they need a leader to get their point across and give power to the community. Not having a leader has helped the Black Lives Matter movement to center themselves on societies that are more marginalized and focus finding ways to reinforce the movement. The  Black Lives Matter movement is different because its lack of leadership allows its members to incorporate their wisdom and solutions to the issues in the community instead of being dictated by a powerful leader. The Black Lives Matter movement had different ideologies/philosophy that were based on a common set of guiding principles which allow them a delineation off the movement and their vision on society. Some of these guiding principles include diversity, globalism, black women, restorative justice, collective value, black families, transgender affirming and many more. Most of these principles focus on welcoming any community and members without focusing on their race, color, sexuality, and age. In addition these principles help the movement set up their political platform which focus on criminal justice, economic justice, reparations, community control, political power, and investment and divestment. Overall their goal was to create a more safe environment, be treated equal, and end racism against many minorities especially in the Black community. Some strategies used by the Black Lives Matter movement to fight against police brutality and racial inequality in the United States are the use of media/ social media and direct action. Through the use of media the Black Lives Matter movement has reach thousand of people around the world and different races. It all started with the hashtag #blacklivesmatter that help the activist communicate their message to the community and maintain solidarity amongst their members in the movement . Since today technology allows many of the members of the movement to post and express themselves it helps their solidarity get stronger. Also many artist such as Beyonce have used their social media to support the Black Lives Matter movement, keep spreading the message, and encourage their followers to do the same. For example Beyoncé invited parents of several African Americans  such Michael Brown , Trayvon Martin , and Eric Garner to come and participate in her production called “Lemonade”. During her production the parents of these African Americans were holding a picture of their sons to show and remind their community what they are fighting for. Also in her single called “Formation” she shows a line of policemen holding up their hands while a young African American boy wearing a hoodie dances in from of them. There is also a shot of graffiti on a wall which reads “stop shootings”. By depicting these kind of messages in her music videos it shows that she supports the movement and wants to help her community. Furthermore the Black Lives Matters also uses direct action  to address the issue in their community. Some examples of direct action used by the movement are rallies, protests, slogans, die-ins, and many more. As stated in the book From #BlackLivesMatter To Black Liberation by Keeanga Yamahtta Taylor ” Protest can draw in larger numbers of people; protests can compel public figures to speak against those conditions. Protest can do many things.”  (189)  They use of rallies and protests was a form of intimidation and to make people feel uncomfortable enough to address the issues and to have more support from the communities. During the rallies and protest they use many slogans such as “Black Lives Matter”, “Hands up, don’t shoot”, “White silence is violence”, “Is my son next” and many more which represented their fight to end racism and police brutality. By using slogans and media the movement depicted all their struggles and the stories of each African American that has been killed by policemen around the world. The Black Panthers Party and the Black Lives Matter movement had great impact in society and today many people remember what they did and are doing for the Black community.   When people hear the name “Black Panthers” it comes to mind black young men with rifles and black leather jackets and berets. Their fight against police brutality and equality for the black community helps other races support them and follow their example into fight g for their rights. “The Black Panther Party is a phenomenon boring in the crucible of the twentieth century an the American historical reality. It has changed, it will continue to change: we are part of that process known as the revolution in human rights.” (Spencer 115). It was an organization that helped the Black community and change many people’s perspectives about African Americans in the United States. Today the Black Live Matter movement has forced many presidential candidates to respond and take action in the legacy of racism and police brutality against African Americans. It also inspired many protests and demand from the Black community and it has been an eye opener for many college students. In addition the Black Lives Matter movement has inspired other movements such as the Native Lives Matter which protested police violence against indigenous people in the United States. It has created a sense of solidarity among different countries and states in where they used some of the slogans used by the Black Lives Matter to show their support or just sending them messages through Twitter. This movement has encourage many communities so use media and share any injustice against any race done by the government and policemen. Overall, even though the Black Panther Party and the Black Lives Matter were founded in different years and had different tactics, ideologies, and leadership ideas , both were fighting for self defense for African Americans against police brutality, government, and economic inequality. In addition both also had a great impact in the Black community and around the world. Their great ideas encourage many African Americans to fight for themselves and encourage other communities to create organizations and movements to fight for justice and equality.
