Brokeback Mountain
is a story about two men, Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist. They were employed to
herd sheep on Brokeback Mountain in the summer of 1963. They developed feelings
for each other through the summer. Their feelings escalated to a sexual affair although
none of them were homosexual. The affair continued. Jack and Ennis were
separated when their job ended. Four years later Jack shows up at Ennis door.
Both of them already got kids and wife’s. However, they still got feelings for
each other. They keep up their affair through the next twenty years without
anyone notice it. Ennis get to know that Jack died after his tire blew up. He visits
Jacks parents, hoping to get hold of Jack`s ashes. He failed but got hold of
one of Jacks tees. The tee and a postcard of Brokeback hanged in Ennis’s
trailer as the only memory of Jack.

The negative view
on homosexual persons prevented Jack and Ennis from staying together. Ennis witnessed
maltreatment of a homosexual man when he was a child. His father showed the
body of a man to prevent his son from doing the same. Jack always wanted to
establish a relationship with Ennis, but Ennis`s fear prevented them.

Both in the story
and the film we get an impression that Jack`s death was caused by an accident.
His wife, Lureen told Ennis that Jack died when his tire blew up. The
explosion made something hit his face and he drowned in his own blood. In the
story Ennis didn’t know if Jack`s death was caused by the tire iron or a real
accident. Somehow, he thought Jack died not by accident. We get an impression
that Jack didn’t died when his tire blew up. It seems more obviously that Jack
died on purpose in the story than in the film. ……

Compare to other typical
Hollywood love stories Brokeback Mountain stands out. First, the story is about
to men who fall in love with each other. Generally, a love story is about a man
and a woman. Secondly, Hollywood love stories often have a positive end. Whereas
Brokeback had a sad ending when Jack died.

Brokeback Mountain
hasn’t had an impact on my attitudes towards same-sex relationship. I have
always accepted and treated homosexual people indifferently, due to the fact that
everyone is a human, no matter if you like boys, girls or both. In fact, the Norwegian
series “SKAM” has taught us about same-sex relationship. As a result of the
series, I believe more teenagers accept same-sexual relationship.  On the other hand, I think the story has had
an impact on the society which existed at that time. I think same-sex
relationship was less accepted at the time the story was written. It is
essential that the author wrote the story about Jack and Ennis to teach people
about same-sex relationship. Not only to inform people about it, but also make
people accept it.
