No longer riding on the merry-go-round

I just had to let it go.

–
John Lennon

Watching the wheels is something that I have been
doing from as long as I can remember.

As a toddler, it was about waiting for my dad to get
home – the honk of his car followed by the rush of the wheels on our driveway was
an every day dream-come-true.  The
tricycle wheels of my preschools days, the trainer wheels of the bicycle that I
outgrew and the knobby tyres that helped me scale heights on my mountain bike
are all wheels that have fuelled my passion – a passion that:

·
steered me towards choosing
math in automobile manufacturing as my primary school project

·
propelled me to do math in
automobile design as my high school project

·
glues me to Discovery Turbo
and

·
continues to drive me on my
path to Automobile Engineering

Every time I saw the wheeled wonders whizzing past
pedestrians on open roads, I felt a sense of excitement and an inherent
curiosity to learn everything I could about them. This led to my constant
obsession with cars. Researching about developments in the world of automobiles
became my hobby. I always kept myself up-to-date with the latest innovations in
this area and would annoy everybody around me with over-enthusiastic
exclamations of the same. A mere craze soon developed into a thirst for
knowledge. I read-up more and more about an entire universe sustained by the
rotation of four wheels. My greed was not satisfied by the acquisition of
knowledge – and soon, cars became my passion. By this time, I knew that there
was only one way to control my never-ending addiction and without the slightest
hint of doubt in my mind, I resolved that I would become an Automobile
Engineer.

From a very young age I have always been a
high-achiever. I am someone who possesses an internal drive that pushes me to
achieve the goals that I set for myself. This intrinsic motivation accelerates me
towards the finish line on the road to success, in any endeavour that I
undertake. My various academic achievements are notable. I have always been in
the top 97 percentile of my entire grade in school. In my 10th
Standard board exams, I topped my school with an overall score of 97%. I have
written various Olympiads, IAIS examinations and Talent Search Exams and have
obtained Distinction and High-Distinction grades in all of them. Academics
apart, I can proudly say that I have two entire files filled with over 200
certificates and acknowledgements for all the extra-curricular activities I
have been a part of till date. An avid debater and orator, I took to the stage
when I was 4 and now all the world is MY stage! I also write and a few of my
articles have even been featured in newspapers. I was the Editor-in-Chief for
my school magazine till the 10th Grade. As a result, I have acquired
the skills of leadership and team-management. I have additionally been the
team-leader for various projects and group assignments in school. I am
responsible, punctual, honest, sincere, perseverant, diligent and respectful. I
am also a guitarist and have passed the Grade 2 examination of the Trinity
College, London syllabus.

As a student it is my duty to give back to society and
I am extremely grateful to have got various opportunities to do just that! In
the 6th standard, a few of my friends and I involved ourselves in an
activity where we would reuse old newspapers, plastic bottles, glass jars,
tetra-packs and other household wastes to create products that could be used
for other purposes. We made yoga mats, table mats, coasters, pen stands, paper
bags and decorative items that we sold at a fair. All the proceeds were donated
to an orphanage and a school for the blind. The main aim of the project was to
educate the society about the importance of the environment and the absolute
necessity of going green and using eco-friendly products.  As part of a community service regime in
school, I went to a small village twice a year, and donated old clothes, food,
toys and books. I also got the opportunity to interact with, teach and learn
from the children attending the village school. A group of students and
teachers (of which I was a part) also conducted a small workshop to educate the
villagers about family planning, literacy and education, job opportunities,
financial aid and medical aid.

As I now gear-up for my future, I have been looking at
different colleges and universities to apply to, around the globe. After a lot
of time and research, I decided that Singapore is the ideal education
destination for me. I remember going on my first holiday to Singapore. Walking
down Orchard Road when I was all of 3 years old, I was being bowled over by the
beauty, cleanliness, infrastructure, people and culture of the city-country.
Now, I have realised that Singapore is the perfect mix of Eastern culture and
Western ideologies. The system of education in Singapore is world-renowned and
Singaporean colleges and universities stand testimony to it.

With all the above considered, I believe that National
University of Singapore is the right fuel for my dreams. The extraordinary
faculty and highly sought-after courses offered will surely help me soar to
great heights. I believe that the Mechanical Engineering course will serve as
the perfect foundation for me to pursue Automobile Engineering in the future.
The University, with a rich history of providing cutting-edge education and
state-of-the-art facilities to the few fortunate students who ultimately become
some of the best minds in the world, would definitely provide the most
conducive environment to enable me to take my first step into the future.  The involvement of students in a hands-on
approach to learning, the innovation and design-centric programmes, the
competitive environment and the various projects that the students undertake to
further crystallise their knowledge of the subject would definitely prepare me
for the fulfilment of my ultimate goal.

The NUS Eco Car Project particularly caught my eye and
heightened my desire to become part of the NUS ecosystem. With the increase in
environmental concerns and the gradual shift from conventional to
non-conventional sources of energy, the Eco Car programme is a revolutionary
project that aims to create the perfect automobile to maximise efficiency and
performance as well as passenger comfort and practicality. Such a project holds
massive relevance in today’s world and it would hence be a privilege for me to
get the opportunity to be a part of it.

Watching the wheels is now passé; I no longer ride
that merry-go-round; I have let it go.

For now, I choose to make them.
