Industrial
revolution influenced urbanization rate and it has caused an amount of change
in the world. After human wanted to live higher quality life and this situation
caused harms natural life for example: global warming, climate change, depletion
of natural resources, etc. As a result of these problems, human started using
sustainability terminology to solve these problems. What is a sustainability?
World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) evaluated the
sustainability ” a development that meets the needs of the present generation
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs” (1978). Sustainable principles shaped cities  and Curitiba is one of these cities. The
Global Sustainable City Award was given to Curitiba in 2010. Curitiba is
located in the east of Brazil. Its population increased rapidly and the
population of Curitiba was 1.8 million in 2010. Curitiba had typical problems
by rapid urban growth but it solved this problem successfully with  well-designed public transportation and
recyling.

Curitiba is one of the most reputable cities in terms of sustainability achievements which can be categorized into six integrated subjects: integrated urban planning, effective public transport system, local environmental consciousness, pedestrian and public priority in the city, social justice concentration and local waste management system (Mills, 2006).  When urbanization rate increases, city’s immigration rate increases so transportation is  badly affected by this situation. Curitiba has public transport system which is based on buses. Within eight years transportatin system had five routes and this routes are shaped with spider web effect so traffic became easy, faster and cheap. With this trafffic solution fuel consumption and air pollution reduced. The buses are colured  according to their functions. (red for express, green for inter-district and yellow for conventional buses) Passengers buy ticket to use this buses. The system is used by 85% of Curitiba’s population (Smith and Raemaekers, 1998). The goverment encouraged the people to use this system so it resolved traffic problems without spending too much. Curitiba is an example to other countries with this successful example of transportation.
