Moving to California as an international student and starting my life from scratch was a challenging process. Overcoming these challenges wasn’t easy; however, IEC helped me through these challenges. IEC was a department of my community college created specifically for international students to prepare them for academics in college. After I graduated from the Intensive English Program at IEC, my teachers were impressed with my academic success and my progress adapting to the country. They thought I could be a good example to other international students like me, so they wanted to shoot a video of me speaking both Turkish and English about my experiences. When I was watching my video, I got extremely motivated to continue in my efforts to help international students like me. After I adapted to my transition to college, I started giving presentations at IEC, and through these presentations, I established enduring friendships with students from different countries such as Taiwan and Japan. Eventually, we decided to create a little study group and started meeting up at the library once a week. During these study groups, we were finishing up our assignments, and I was tutoring many of my friends since I was ahead of most of them. I found it highly exhilarating to see my friends getting better since nothing motivates me more than seeing hard work and sharp thinking reach fruition. As being a part of these study groups, I believe that I have gained the skills necessary to excel as a leader. Helping and mentoring others improved my personal growth, and I became more innovative in creating solutions to their problems. Additionally, I learned to be a source of motivation to others when dealing with certain hardships. I tried my best to encourage them, and they worked hard to overcome these challenges. I believe this experience will help me in many areas in the future, both when studying at the university and when working in the engineering field. Inspiration, innovation, and teamwork are necessary elements for me to reach my goals and to succeed.
