Throughout history, society has forced women into a state of domestication and submission. Due to social instinct, today, a majority of society see women as subordinate to men without interest in the status or position they hold in society. In the advertisement, Palmolive Soap, women are presented solely on physical appearance and society’s stereotypical outlook. The power and privilege of modern women today is traceable to the past where women had few powers domestically and politically. The advertisement represents women in this aspect to emphasize the subordinate nature of women and consequently, keeping women in their traditional niches as submissive housewives. This is achieved through historical reference to how women were in the past, stating the role of married and unmarried women, and linking beauty to the role of a wife.During the time that the advertisement was published, the 1930s, women’s interactions with society were limited to domestic interactions. As depicted in the ad, women are seen wearing domestic or casual clothing contrary to the work clothing of men. This serves to emphasize the opposing roles of men and women traditionally. With reference to the traditional roles women played, the women in the ad are dressed beautifully to act solely as housewives who bear and raise children for society while men provide the economic and political structure for the family. However, in the 1930s, women in the past decade recently obtained enfranchisement jeopardizing the traditional structure of the family. The ad alludes to the classical family structure in order to persuade women in not gaining more independence socially as they already had politically. The time period also falls into the era of the Great Depression for the United States causing the ad to further urge women into their roles as housewives. This encouragement is attributed to the shortage of jobs in the United States and widespread unemployment. For a women to work was seen as unnecessary since husband of the family would usually support the family and if the women was unmarried, her parents would still be supporting her. Therefore, women who held jobs usually had husbands who also held jobs. So by encouraging women to return to traditional roles, jobs would be open for other men of other families, decreasing the overall unemployment rate in the United States. However, this effort was in vain since the jobs of women were very gender specific. Women often worked as school teachers or nursing so few men would apply to fill these roles. Women would inevitably take jobs out of economic necessity due to the depression decreasing the wages of their husbands. The practicality of women would be later realized in the urgency of war. However, the government felt the need to prohibit more than one member of the family working in the 1932 Federal Economy Act and restricted married women from the federal government. Still, many married women sought out jobs for economic benefits to provide for their families. On the contrary, some women choose to remain single for the sake of their education and career. They saw no reason to be legally bound by marriage to economically supported themselves when they already had a well paying jobs and could provide for themselves. The Great Depression also left many men unable to find suitable partners. Overall, women are represented in clothing reminiscent to the past in order to urge women to return to the traditional social and economic structure of a family.Married women also faced criticisms in their roles depending on their position of marriage. The article attempts to keep women in traditional roles by stating the role of women as wives who need love. Women are stated to require lovely skin in order to not be “ashamed of themselves.” Married women are argued to only be pleasing to a man and nothing more to emphasize her role as a mother and not a worker. This drives women to stay in their roles as mothers. However, for unmarried women, such as widows or simply single women, they had to find employed work similar to how men were in search of employment. By not explicitly mentioning single women, the ad dissociates single women from society in general which discourages single women from seeking employment. Overall, the ad mentions the role of married women in an attempt to keep women in their traditional structure.Palmolive Soap advertisement is attempting to sell a product for better skin care, while also making it noticeably sexist towards women. The audience that the ad is directed towards is the early to middle-aged group of women based on the line, “A women can blame herself if she loses love by getting ‘middle-aged’ skin!”, and in turn, gives the group of women a negative connotation by correlating “”middle-aged’ skin” with the loss of love. By doing so, the main purpose of the advertisement is create a need for better skin for women. This quote, “…he never takes me out any more! Sometimes I think he’s ashamed of me!” viewed women as a dependent group of people that relied on men to achieve any form of happiness. The woman displayed in the advertisement strives to get the approval of her husband which furthermore creates a need for this product. As was previously states, the advertisements depicts women with reference to past social structures, mentioning roles of married women, and linking beauty to a house wife in an attempt to keep women in their traditional roles as mothers and housewives. While simultaneously selling a product, this corporation overall depreciates women as a whole and undermines the equality that women are entitled to. Today, women have achieved nearly full equality to men with mankind progressing faster than ever before.Learn your lesson from this lady…if you use the wrong soap you may get the dreaded ‘Middle Aged Skin’ and your husband will no longer take you anywhere.
