School RecessMost people would say that that recess is a big waste of time but it is actually more beneficial than you think. Recess is a time to relax, socialize, play, and take a break from school work. Middle school students should have recess because it helps students with their social skills, gives students an opportunity to exercise, recess also gives kids a chance to perform better in class.Like previously stated middle school students should have recess because it gives them time and opportunity to exercise which can be limited now that students are getting less and less active at home . “Research has even shown that…children who don’t have the opportunity to be active during the school day don’t usually compensate during after-school hours.” (Rae Pica, Why Kids Need Recess). Students might not exercise after school when they don’t have recess. During recess not all kids play strenuously, kids who move moderately during recess allows them to achieve the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity. In addition adolescents also benefit socially because of recess. For example, let’s say students are playing a game of football and there’s a red team and a blue team. The quarterback for the blue team crosses the line of scrimmage and then throws the ball, (by the way that’s against the rules) the red team might come to a compromise with the blue team, and then the blue team might start to negotiate, this proves kids learn to compromise and negotiate; two very important social skills. Cooperation is also a social skill students gain when they take part in imaginative play. Students gain the skill of cooperation by possibly exchanging chores around an imaginary house, in order to do that they have to communicate. Most importantly recess increases a students cognitive development. Cognitive development is a students way of processing information which happens to be the aim of instruction in school. However Karen Macbeth stated that “It would be hard for schools to give kids more time to play when they don’t have enough time for instruction”. Her focus is more on academics. What she needs to know is, according to Dr.Olga Jarrett and her colleagues at Georgia State University, who conducted a survey on kids with recess. What they found may convince Karen Macbeth that recess increases their academic level. The findings of the observations were that when students had recess they perform better , han without recess.  Five of the students had ADD and still performed better than when they did not have recess (Rae Pica, Why Kids Need Recess). In conclusion older students should have recess because, recess gives kids an opportunity to exercise, benefits students social skill, and gives students opportunity to perform better academically. In order for students to grow academically they must have recess and there should be policies and laws stating that no students recess should be taken away.
