Sir Ken Robinson started his talk with
going back to the basics. What does it mean? Back to basics according to him
means the beginning of education. It is a group of subjects that they think are
more important than all the others and he mentioned the STEM disciplines
(science, technology, engineering and mathematics). These are the very
important fundamental disciplines and they are necessary but not sufficient for
the type of education we need. Also, according to him the basics of education
are not any group of subjects or discipline, the basics of education are the
purposes of education, it means and it processes. I agree with Sir Ken simply
because as a teacher our purpose is not just to teach the students with
different subjects but on how we can we teach them to learn to be the future of
their generation with integration of the subjects we taught in school. Robinson
talks about the four purposes of education – ECONOMIC, CULTURAL, SOCIAL and
PERSONAL. With these four purposes, teachers can think of in what ways they can
be improved their teaching. Change is inevitable. We now live in the world full
of changes. Just like what he said, creativity and adaptability are the bottom
line of competencies. Let’s not forget the signature features of humanity, it
is called diversity. These three words are not new to education. When
industrial revolution developed, changed in education happened. These days,
education is changing faster than educators can keep up.

I would like to relate these to Tyler’s
Rationale – the Four Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction – (1) What educational
purposes should the school seek to attain? (2) What educational experiences can
be provided that will likely attain these purposes? (3) How can these
educational experiences be effectively organized? (4) How can we determined
whether the purposes are being attained? In developing a curriculum, we must
look seriously to school purposes, and we have to find the best teachers’ and
students’ activities to achieve the school purpose, then we must organize the
experiences effectively by using the right stages and lastly, we have to
evaluate all the experiences without exception. It looks like easy but in
contrary, these principles should still pay more attention in developing
curriculum. In addition, we also have to be aware of the trends and issues
(happened in our country) in developing curriculum.

With the advancement of technology in
education, still, the teachers and the learners are the heart of education.
There is no harm in changing, changing means improving and improving means
innovating. We should be open in changing because we are now in a
transformative education, education that change and can be changed.  With the presence of new technology in
education, we can improve the quality and consistency of instruction by
adapting new strategies, methodologies and pedagogies and both the students and
teachers will be worthy of this. But do not forget the basics of education,
still it is the beginning of education. We should always look back so that we
can see the future of education.
