What if you were forced to be placed somewhere because of your religion? Unfortunately this is what happened during the Holocaust. The Holocaust started in 1939 and is still talked about today. You might be asking what is the Holocaust? It was a brutal battle in history between the Nazis and Jews. The Start of the Holocaust In 1921 Adolf became leader of the Nazis. The group believed that their Aryan race was superior to others. To them Aryan meant European but not Jewish, Slavic, or Romanian. In 1934 Hitler became Germany’s head of state. Concentration Camps Jews were taken from their homes and were forced to go to concentration camps. These camps were horrible. They were placed in a camp based on nationality. Higher class Jews were doing jobs such as administrative positions. Lower class were doing jobs such as construction and mining. In other words, the lower class were doing harder jobs than the higher class. The camp elders were in charge of choosing life or death of the prisoners. Many deaths happened in the camps. Nazis raided people’s homes looking for Jews to take to concentration camps.SurvivorHowever, there are survivors from the Holocaust that are still alive today. One of them is David S. Wisnia. He was in Auschwitz in 1944 when Nazis took him to Oswiecim and placed him in a concentration camp.  He describes it as a horrible place and says, “…you wish you were never born at all.” One day a guard asked, “Who can sing?””I can sir.” David answered. He became a privileged prisoner. He received more respect than other prisoners. Then, the Nazis moved him to Dachau. There he was not considered a privileged prisoner anymore because there were new Nazi soldiers who didn’t know that David was a privileged prisoner. The Jews got off the transport and David decided he would escape. He walked a good distance away from the group when all of a sudden a parade of tanks came by. They asked David what he was doing. Luckily, those people weren’t the Nazis. David hopped onto a tank and put on one of their uniforms. He didn’t leave them until he came back to America. He then went home only to find his family had died in a massacre. Later David learned that the Nazis were trying to take his family but his father resisted. The Nazis ended up raiding their house and found a gun. They shot the family because his father had resisted. David was left without a family, but since he was older he was able to provide for himself. Today, David is very thankful to be alive and is married to his wife, Hope. He is also still singing and even wrote a song about his time during the Holocaust. How the Jews Felt  What if you were a Jew fighting for your life during the Holocaust? How would you feel? The Jews were very afraid of what the Nazis would do. Many Jews died of starvation and disease. Others died from poisonous gas chambers. The Nazis would put Jews in a room and release a poisonous gas that would kill them. The most intense period of death was in 1942. Around 2.7 MILLION Jews died!Adolf HitlerIt is unbelievable to think that one man could cause such a horrible event. Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 in Braunau am Inn, Austria. His parents are named Alois Hitler and Klara Hitler. Adolf would carry around a picture of his mother, Klara because it was the only person he truly loved. He has several siblings named Paula, Angela, Alois Jr., Edmund, Otto, Ida, and Gustav Hitler. How it EndedLuckily this brutal battle between the Jews and the Nazis came to an end in 1945 when Russians came to attack. It was winter and the Nazi’s couldn’t handle the cold and they thought others wouldn’t attack because of the weather so they didn’t worry about fighting back.  On April 30th, 1945 a soldier warned Adolf Hitler and his wife, Eva Braun who Adolf had married just two days before the end of the Holocaust, that the Russians were coming to attack. Adolf, Eva, and their Alsatian dog named Blondie all went to an underground bunker 55 feet underground. Adolf and Eva tested a Cyanide capsule (poison) on their dog to make sure the poison would work on themselves. It did kill Blondie so they each took a Cyanide capsule. To make sure he was dead, Adolf shot himself with his own pistol.  And on May 8th, 1945 German Forces surrendered. As Adolf HItler said, “My spirit will rise from the grave and the world will see I was right.” I hope that never happens because even though I wasn’t in the Holocaust I am a Jew and this is very important to me and my family. This was a very rough time in history and makes me appreciate what I have today.
